Shibori

In the studio, shibori fabric dying. Yes, I’ve done this many years before in undergrad, and now here I am experimenting with the traditional technique once again. Without any desired outcome I had fun folding, wrapping and tying fabric for the dye bath.

“Shibori (絞り染め Shiborizome) is a Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing it, or capping.”

The dyed fabric has been re-folded and again placed between boards to form a resist.

Soaking in the dye bath the wood is allowed to float to achieve a “bleed”.

Jennifer Angus, SoHE Faculty Show, Process: Discovery and Response

Design Gallery, Nancy Nicolas Hall

September 14, 2012 – October 21, 2012 Ruth Davis Design Gallery

This group show featuring School of Human Ecology faculty was my introduction to working with Jenny Angus and her insects.

For this exhibit she used clear wind cicadas(lower diagonals), blue wing cicadas(circles), dead-leaf butterflies (border), and hand painted velvet flowers (accents).

This was the first time Angus chose to use the velvet flowers in her installation. It was an exciting element that added an interesting movement of color throughout the space.

Also included in the space was a curio cabinet. Visitors are encouraged to satisfy their curiosity and open the drawers. Each drawer consists of a diorama with insects doing different activities. When any row of drawers are opened sequentially from left to right a narrative is revealed.
